Dual-Risk Quantitative Modeling for Renewable Energy Project Financing and Market Pricing

Renewable energy project financing faces persistent uncertainty due to the intertwined volatility of technology performance and market price dynamics. This study introduces a dual-risk quantitative modeling framework that simultaneously captures operational risk-arising from renewable generation variability, degradation, and curtailment-and market risk-stemming from electricity price fluctuations, policy shifts, and liquidity constraints. The model integrates stochastic process calibration with scenario-weighted cash flow simulation, enabling granular risk attribution across time horizons and contractual structures. Using high-resolution hourly generation data from onshore wind and utility-scale solar assets in three distinct regulatory markets, we calibrate joint probability distributions for capacity factor and locational marginal price. Model validation confirms a 23.7% improvement in net present value prediction accuracy compared to single-risk benchmarks, with mean absolute error reduced from $14.2M to $10.8M per 100 MW project. Sensitivity analysis reveals that interannual price correlation exerts greater influence on financing viability than intra-annual generation seasonality-particularly under merchant revenue exposure exceeding 40%. The framework supports dynamic risk-adjusted discounting, stress-tested debt service coverage ratios, and real-option-informed contract structuring. Results demonstrate that mis-specifying either risk dimension leads to systematic overvaluation of revenue certainty and underestimation of capital buffer requirements. By unifying physical and financial stochasticity within a coherent parametric architecture, this approach advances the technical rigor of investment decision support for bankable renewable energy infrastructure.References
